 Puggle

Breed Group: Sporting

Puggles bring together the silliness of a Pug with the loving devotion of a Beagle. These pups can be tough to predict, but at their best, they’re low-maintenance, family-friendly companions that want nothing more than to be by your side.

Behavior

Puggles can be a wild card because of their mixed genes. They can be big barkers if they take after their Beagle parents or clownish if the Pug side is stronger. Both breeds tend to be kind, playful, social, and loving, but they’re known to have a stubborn streak. Puggles love treats, though, so the more praise and positive reinforcement you can give them, the faster they will learn. They’re little piglets too, so don’t expect the treats to last long.

Coat

Puggles are one of the most low-maintenance breeds around when it comes to grooming and maintenance. They have short fur that varies in color and is fairly easy to maintain. Both Beagles and Pugs shed a lot, though, so keep a brush handy at all times to keep their hair under control.

Lifestyle

Puggles love being part of the family, and they get along great with kids, cats, and other dogs. They should be watched around small children to make sure the kids are not too rough. The Puggle's size and low-key lifestyle make them perfect for apartment living. They need to live inside with the family, though, and may be prone to barking and howling if their Beagle side is strong.

Activity

Puggles have average energy levels, so they’re content with taking a nice walk or having playtime in the yard each day. However, both Pugs and Beagles have hearty appetites, so it’s important to keep them active enough to burn off all those calories and avoid putting on too much weight.

Temperament

If you’re looking for a spunky pup, the puggle just might be your answer. The puggle is the best of both worlds: A faithful and playful companion, puggles are good-natured dogs that can make friends with just about anybody! Because puggles will want to befriend other dogs and humans they meet along the way, socialization is crucial for raising a well-mannered canine.

Puggle owners should be aware of the contrasting qualities between the pug and the beagle that the breed can exhibit. Puggles were bred in part to develop a more laid-back dog than the beagle, who revels in the joy of the hunt. However, it can be hard to predict where on the spectrum a puggle may fall; indeed, they will be a bit of both and perhaps at surprising times! While a puggle is happy to spend time at home close to their human, there will also be moments when they go into beagle-mode and follow their hunter instincts. Don’t be surprised if your mellow puggle is suddenly compelled to chase, dig, or otherwise seek out prey!

Though puggles love dashing around outdoors because of their hunting instincts, they should live indoors. This, in addition to their playful demeanor, means they can get quite restless inside. Puggles will require devoted playtime and an abundance of toys to keep their minds occupied.
